Prof. Mikko Hiltunen has completed his Ph.D from the University of Kuopio, Finland, in which after he conducted postdoctoral studies at the MGH/Harvard Medical School, USA. Currently he works at the University of Eastern Finland and he is responsible for genetic, epigenetic and functional studies related to AD. He has published over 130 articles in the international scientific journals with referee practice. He is an editorial board member of four international scientific journals and a board member of several research consortia.

Research interests

  • Identification novel risk gene variants associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD)  and elucidation of their effects on processes relevant for AD pathogenesis.
  • Elucidation of the effects of epigenetic alterations on the function of AD-related genes in conjunction with risk gene variations and altered expression.
  • Characterization the functional role of AD-related risk genes, pathways, and co-morbidities in AD pathogenesis using in vitro and in vivo disease models. The focus in these models is set to the factors that affect ß-amyloid generation, degradation, and clearance as well as tau pathology.
Role: Researcher
