Prof. Iain Wilkinson

Prof. Iain Wilkinson

Biography:

Iain is a Professor of Magnetic Resonance (MR) Physics and leads the adult neuroimaging research programme within the Academic Radiology, part of the University´s Medical School based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, UK. He particularly enjoys the clinical applications of MR is a UK state-registered Clinical Scientist, and an honorary Consultant with local NHS Trusts.

Prior to joining the University of Sheffield in 1997, he was an NHS physicist at The Middlesex Hospital (UCL Hospitals) and Addenbrooke´s Hospital in Cambridge. He obtained his Bachelors in Physics from the University of Lancaster, Masters in Radiation Physics from St Bartholomew´s Hospital Medical College, London and Doctorate in MR from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London (at Hammersmith Hospital, now part of Imperial College).

Iain has published over 165 peer-reviewed journal papers, written several book chapters, is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in Engineering in Medicine, an Affiliate (non-clinical Fellow) of the Royal College of Physicians of London, an Associate of the British Society of Neuroradiologists and a member of the British Institute of Radiology and, the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

Research Interests

Iain’s collaborative work aims to further our understanding of neurological disease and thereby aid its diagnosis and treatment via in-vivo Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging & Spectroscopy. The emphasis of this has always been on the translation of MR techniques and the findings of MR studies into clinical use. Clinical areas thus far concentrated on have included::

  • central nervous system involvement in Diabetes Mellitus
  • neurodegereration / the dementias / Psychiatric diseases
  • cerebrovascular
  • neuro-oncology
  • retroviral infection/encephalopathies
  • abnormalities of the spino-cerebellar thalamic tracts

Many in-vivo MR techniques are employed and developed including exogenous & endogenous tissue perfusion and kinetics, macrovascular flow quantification, spectroscopy, BOLD fMRI, diffusion and now elastography.

Role: Researcher
